‘Crossfire’ victim Jhony’s kins held from near Khaleda’s office

Police on Thursday night detained the family members of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal leader Nuruzzaman Jony who was killed in ‘crossfire’ in the city’s Khilgaon area as they came to meet BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia at her office.
Slain Jony’s father Yakub Ali, mother Mariam Begum, wife Munira Parven mother-in-law Sumi Haq and his younger sister Fatematuz Zohra Tuli along with JCD joint general secretary Selina Sultana Nishita had been in front of BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia’s Gulshan office around 7:30pm to meet her.As plainclothes police blocked them in front of the gate, the family members requested the law enforcers to get them a chance to meet Khaleda.
The law enforcers told the family members that they cannot allow them to meet Khaleda without permission from the high-ups.
At one stage, Jony’s expectant wife Munira told police, ”I consider Khaleda Zia as my mother. I’m here to get her blessing as I’m expecting my baby this month. Please allow me to get inside.”
As the family members were stepping towards their hired CNG-run auto-rickshaw to return home having failed to get permission after waiting for nearly an hour, female police first detained JCD leader Nishita.
Later, plainclothes police get into the auto-rickshaw beside its driver and took Jony’s family members to Gulshan police station.
On January 20, Nuruzzaman Jony, 30, son of Yakub Hossain, was killed in a ‘gunfight’ with the members of the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) in the city’s Khilgaon area.
Jony’s family and BNP said that police picked up Jony from near Dhaka central jail and shot him dead.
Meanwhile, police also barred a group of pro-BNP journalist leaders, including BFUJ general secretary MA Aziz, Jatiya Press Club general secretary Syed Abdal Ahmed and DUJ ex- general secretary Baker Hossain, from entering Khaleda Zia’s office around 8:40pm. – UNB
