Ctg gold smuggler gets life term RI

CHITTAGONG – A Chittagong court today for the first time sentenced a gold smuggler to life term rigorous imprisonment (RI) in a case filed for smuggling gold.The court of Chittagong Metropolitan Sessions Judge Mohammad Shah-e-Nur also fined him TK 10 thousand and in default to suffer two months more in imprisonment.The convicted gold smuggler is Abdus Shukkur, son of Ana Ahammad, hailed from Fatikchhari upazila of the district.Court sources said, Customs Intelligence arrested Muscat-returnee Shukkur with 40 gold bars from Chittagong Shah Amanat International Airport on April 22, 2015 and filed a case with city’s Patenga Thana against him in this connection.Police submitted charge-sheet against him on June 14, 2015 while the court framed charges on October 13 the same year.The court today examined a total of seven prosecution witnesses out of eight and passed the verdict, court sources said.
