Dhaka – Bangladesh suffered an early jolt losing 5 wickets for 55 in the 2nd innings on day-2 after dismissing West Indies for 246 in the first innings in the first Test of a two-match series at Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chattogram on Friday.
Despite the collapse, Bangladesh extended their lead to 133 with a 78-run first innings lead with five wickets in hand where Mushfiqur Rahim [11*] and Mehidy Hasan Miraz [0*] were in batting in the sixth wicket stand to play on the third day.
The five Bangladesh batsmen — Mohammad Mithun [17], Mominul Haque [12] and Soumya Sarkar [11], Imrul Kayes [2] and Shakib Al Hasan [1] — returned to the pavilion as Jomel Warrican [2/22], Roston Chase [2/16] and Devendra Bishoo [1/5] shared five wickets for the visitors in the third session.
Earlier, debutant spinner Nayeem Hasan’s 5/61 helped Bangladesh take a 78-run lead in the first innings dismissing West Indies for 246/10 in the middle of the second day’s third session.
With the feat, seventeen-year-old local boy has become the youngest bowler to have five-for on Test debut alongside being the eighth Bangladesh cricketer to do so.
From the eight-man Bangladesh list, three — Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Mahmudullah Riyad and Taijul Islam – are his teammates in this ongoing Test.The other four debutant five-for bowlers of Bangladesh are Elias Sunny, Manjural Islam, Naimur Rahman and Sohag Gazi.
With Nayeem’s feat, the records for the youngest Test centurion (Mohammad Ashraful) and the youngest Test five-for on debut belong to Bangladesh now.
Nayeem completed the five-wicket haul in 60.2 overs, bowling out Jomel Warrican on 225/9. For his career’s first Test wicket, Nayeem dismissed Roston Chase on 77/4 in 29.1 overs and got Sunil Ambris, Devendra Bishoo and Kemar Roach out bind dint of lbw.
West Indies played 64 overs [19-31-14] in less than three sessions for their first innings collection [54-133-55] opening the first innings on the day’s first session after dismissing Bangladesh’s last two wickets to finish the innings on 324/10 in 92.4 overs in the morning.
Apart from Nayeem’s haul, Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan got three wickets for 47 runs while Taijul Islam and Mehidy Hasan Miraz got one wicket apiece, showing spin dominance throughout the innings.
Shane Dowrich [63* off 101b; 2×4; 3×6] and Shimron Hetmyer [63 off 47b; 5×4; 4×6] hit half centuries for the visitors.
Hetmyer was caught behind by Mushfiqur Rahim on 180/6 in 46th over, sharing a sixth stand partnership of 92 off 14.1 overs with S Dowrich, starting after the dismissal of S Ambris.
Roston Chase [31 off 43b; 4×4], Sunil Ambris [19 0ff 69b], K Powell [14 off 20b; 2×4] and K Brathwaite[13 off 47b; 2×4] were other double-digit scorers for the visitors.
In the morning, Bangladesh resumed the first innings with an overnight score of 315/8 in 88 overs and lost two wickets within 28 balls to add only nine runs more before West Indies spinner Jomel Warrican dismissed both wickets.
Overnight batsman Taijul Islam played for 39* off 68 balls, including four boundaries and one six, while another overnight batsman Nayeem Hasan [26 off 74b; 2×4] was caught by Shai Hope at 324/9 in 92.1 overs before Mustafizur Rahman was out by lbw on innings total in 92.4 overs.
Taijul and debutant Nayeem shared 65 off 20 overs in the ninth wicket stand, starting from 259/8 in 72.1 overs.
Jomel Warrican [4/62] and Shannon Gabriel [4/70] equally shared eight wickets while Devendra Bishoo [1/60] and Kemar Roach [1/63] two wickets in the first innings for West Indies.
