Police are questioning five persons in connection with the murder of SB Inspector Mahfuzur Rahman and his wife Swapna Begum. The couple was stabbed to death on Friday.
The daughter of the slain couple ‘Oishee’ and their 11-year old domestic help ‘Shumi’ are among those being interrogated.
The daughter was ‘hiding’ ever since her parent’s blood-drenched bodies were recovered on Friday from the bathroom—bolted from outside— of their Chamelibagh flat.
She walked into Paltan Police Station Saturday noon and identified herself to a duty officer, a police officer told bdnews24.com.
Later, taking her along, a team of detectives has launched an operation that led to the nabbing of four others. They were then taken to Detective Branch office at Minto road.
DMP Deputy Commissioner (media) told bdnews24.com in the evening five, including Oishee and the domestic help, are being questioned.
This bdnews24.com correspondent saw her being put into a detective police department vehicle after she surrendered to police at noon.
“The OC then took her to the office of Motijheel Zone deputy commissioner.”
From there she was taken to Detective Police office on Minto road.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Deputy Commissioner (Media) Masudur Rahman had confirmed bdnews24.com about the daughter being in their custody”.
Oishee, an O-Level student from the Oxford International School, is the eldest of their two children.
The caretaker of their house said Oishee, took his seven-year old brother Oihee and the house maid Shumi and left on Thursday morning.
Oihee was sent back to a relative’s house in a riskshaw in the afternoon.
The phone conversation she had with relatives gave rise to suspicion among investigators.
Oishee came to the station alone—Shumi was not with her.
Mahfuzur Rahman, 45, a Special Branch officer, his wife Swapna Begum, 42, used to live on a fourth-floor flat at Chamelibagh with their two children and a child domestic help.
The couple’s blood-splattered bodies were recovered on Friday evening from a bathroom in the flat, which was locked from outside.
The bodies were reportedly found inside the bathroom attached to Oishi’s room.
Mahfuz’s brother, Monsur Rahman, lodged a case at the Motijheel Police Station on Saturday morning, accusing unnamed persons.
A post-mortem report on Saturday showed that the couple were stabbed to death by more than one ‘amateur killer’.
There were two stab wounds on Mahfuz’s body while Swapna had a total of 11 wounds.
Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) Forensic department’s Assistant Professor Sohel Mahmud, who conducted the autopsy, said there were ‘at least two or more’ killers .
“The nature and number of the stab wounds suggests that the killers were amateurs.”
SB Deputy Inspector General Mosharraf Hossain Bhuiyan on Friday had suspected hate behind the ‘planned murder’, believed to have been committed by ‘at least four persons’.
DMCH forensic department Assistant Professor Sohel Mahmud said a double-edged knife was used to kill the couple.
Different body parts were also collected for visceral tests.
