The 59th death anniversary of poet of Ruposi Bangla Jibanananda Das passed silently in Barisal, the native city of the poet, on Tuesday.
Only few admires of the poet in morning put wrath under the mural of the poet at Poet Jibanananda memorial hall built at the parental home of the poet on Kabi Jibanananda Das Sarak in the city on this occasion.Principal Tapankar Chakraborty, Dr. Moshtak Al Mehedi, Kazi Selina, Partha Sarathi Biswas, Mukul Das, Goutam Ghosh, Advocate Nitai Chandra, Kazi Mozammel, members of Jatiya Kabita Parishad Barisal unit, were present there.
Participants of the programme said due to adverse political situation, no programme at large scale was taken to observe the death anniversary of the poet.They demanded implementation of the Dhanshiri River eco park project and excavation of Dhanshiri River, establishing museum, memorials and sculptures of the poet in places connected with his life, works and memories and more study and research on his life and achievements. Barisal Sangskritik Sangathan Samanya Parishad, a unit of 28 cultural organizations, Jibanananda Smriti Sangsad, the organization named after the poet, B M School and BM College, the education and working place of the poet, also failed to organize any programme on this occasion.Mentionable Jibanananda, best known as the poet of ‘Ruposi Bangla’ is the creator of ‘Banalota Sen’— the unparalleled character embodying the serene beauty of Bangali woman.
As a teacher of English in Barisal and Kolkata, he was well-read in Mallarme, Rimbaud, Valery, Pound, and Eliot. He was unhappy with the conditions of modern living and often expresses a deeply tragic sensibility. Weirdness came from Jibanananda Das. Grotesque images and surrealist expansion of the poetic imagination was a feature of the modernism in Bangla literature and he considered as the greatest Bengali poet of all times, the admires explained.
Born on February 17, 1899, Jibanananda Das is arguably the most influential romantic poet of the post-Tagore era. He died in a road accident on October 22, 1954 in Kolkata. Barisal Correspondent
