SC upholds death penallty against Kamaruzzaman

The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court (SC) Monday upheld the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT)-2 verdict sentencing Jamaat leader Muhammad Kamaruzzaman to death for committing crimes against humanity during the War of Liberation.
A four-member bench of the Appellate Division (AD) headed by Justice SK Sinha delivered the verdict around 9.10 in the morning.Three other judges of the bench are Justice Md Abdul Wahhab Miah, Justice Hasan Foez Siddique and Justice AHM Shamsuddin Choudhury.
Earlier on May 9, 2013, the ICT-2 handed down capital punishment to Jamaat senior assistant secretary general Kamaruzzaman, for his crimes against humanity committed during the War of Liberation.
Kamaruzzaman was sentenced to death as five out of seven charges (charge numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, and 7) had been proved ICT said and he was given death penalty for charge numbers 3 and 4.
The third charge was for killing 164 innocent civilians in the village of Sohagpur in Sherpur and the fourth charge was for killing Golam Mostafa of village Gridda Narayanpur in Sherpur in 1971.
The SC upheld death by majority for Kamaruzzaman in charge number three.
Earlier on September 17 last, the Appellate Division kept the verdict on pending with conclusion of the appeal hearing for Kamaruzzaman.
On June 6 last, 62-year-old Kamaruzzaman filed an appeal with the Appellate Division, seeking cancellation of death penalty handed down to him.
Kamaruzzaman was arrested on July 13, 2010 and later shown arrested in the crimes against humanity case. He has been in jail since then. – BSS
