Delhi Int’l Chess: GM Ziaur Rahman finishes runner-up

Dhaka – Bangladeshi Grand Master Ziaur Rahman of Saif Sporting Club finished runner-up in the 16th Delhi Open International Rating Chess Tournament with eight points after making a draw with Indian GM Karthikeyan Murali in the 10th and last round held in the Indian capital New Delhi on Tuesday.GM Ziaur Rahman and other two players earned eight points each after the 10th and last round, but in the tie-breaking system GM Zia became runner-up while GM Naiditsch Arkadij of Azerbaijan emerged unbeaten champion in the event.In the meet, GM Zia won 7 games, drew 2 games and lost 1 game. GM Zia won against GM Tran Tuan Minh of Vietnam in the 4th round, won against GM Amonatov Farrukh of Tajikistan in the 5th round, won against GM Rozum Iavn of Russia in the 8th round and won against GM Sergei Tiviakov of Netherlands in the 9th round. GM Zia drew with GM Deep Sengupta of India in the 6th round and drew with GM Kathikeyan Murali of India in the 10th round.He lost only one game against champion of the event GM Naiditsch Arkadik of Azerbaijan in the 8th round. Tahsin Tajwar Zia of Golden Sporting Club became 210th securing 3.5 points, Mezanur Rahman of Borga became 243rd with 3 points while Md. Abul Kashem became 255th with 2 points.GM Zia received prize money of 4 lakh Indian rupees. GM Zia also increased 31 rating from this event.A total of 265 players from 24 countries including 27 grandmasters, 1 woman grandmaster, 24 International Masters and 5 women international Masters participated in the event.UNB news agency
