Dhaka, Mar 9 – Gono Forum president Dr Kamal Hossain on Saturday alleged that democracy was buried in the country by holding a ‘tainted and so-called’ national election on December 30.

“The national unity must be cemented and intensified to restore democracy, the rule of law and people’s voting rights,” Dr Kamal said.
He said people are active to get rid of the current situation. “We’ll have to work in this regard.”

A day after Gono Forum MP Sultan Mohammad Mansur took oath violating the party’s decision, party president Dr Kamal Hossain came up with the remarks, according to a party press release.
Mansur, who was elected MP from Moulvibazar-2 contesting the December-30 election as a Gono Forum candidate using BNP’s election symbol ‘Sheaf of Paddy’, was sworn in on Thursday, prompting Gono Forum and Jatiya Oikya Front to expel him from the party and the alliance.
Earlier in the day, BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said Mansur belittled himself by joining a parliament which ‘lacks’ people’s representatives.

At Gono Forum’s meeting held at the party’s Arambagh central office, Dr Kamal also said people want to get rid of ‘misrule’. “The state can’t be run based on falsehood.”
He said there is no scope to deny that people want a healthy politics in the country. “The politics in the past was people-oriented one in the country.”
The Gono Forum president urged the colleagues of his party’s Dhaka city unit to actively work with people identifying the problems they are facing.
“The healthy politics will be visible very soon if we can always stay with people by uniting their strength. Most of the country’s people are in favour of healthy politics. If the practice of such politics goes on, bad politics will be removed from the country forever,” he observed. – UNB
