Democracy, economic justice inalienable: Dr. Zafrullah Chy

Founder of Gonoshasthya Kendra, Dr. Zafrullah Chowdhury on Saturday called for courage to assert the democratic rights and raise voice against economic injustice. These are the two main cornerstones on which the War of Liberation was fought, he said.Addressing a discussion meeting organized by the Kachua Nagorik Committee at the National Press Club as the chief guest he said it was pity that even judges looked for official goodwill instead asserting their lofty positions while giving verdicts of cases.
He said that there would be no want in the country and people would have affluence if there was good governance to ensure democracy and economic justice. At present while the people remained deprived of their democratic rights the economy was being plundered and banks turned bankrupt by corrupt elements, he said.
Presided over by Shahidullah Kaiser, the function was also addressed by former MP and Chandpur district development coordinator, AKM Shahidul Islam, eminent journalist Mostafa Kamal Majumder, freedom fighters and former joint secretaries to the government Mizanur Rahman, general secretary of the Dhaka Union of Journalists Jahangir Alam Prodhan and freedom fighter Eng. Manik among others.
Dr. Zafrullah Chowdhury said the country and its people are suffering as politics has gone away from politicians to the hands of businessmen and a section of bureaucrats who lack the spirit of sharing. Lack of effective decentralization of power to local levels was causing suppression of local initiatives and diversity.
Dr. AKM Shahidul Islam said that Kachua has lost the atmosphere of cordiality among its inhabitants as those who are eager to do politics do not mix with the people and do not nurture mutual respect for each other.
Other speakers made a fervent appeal for restoration of the atmosphere of cordiality in the Upazila so that people can visit their homes and contribute to the development of their own villages without facing undue hassle. – Staff Reporter
