Opposition BNP on Wednesday alleged that democracy in the country has now got bloodstained while humanity is in exile due to the government’s misrule. “Now democracy has fallen flat getting bloodstained and humanity has gone in exile. The odour of dead bodies is found in the air everywhere due to the government’s misrule and repressive acts,” said BNP chairperson’s adviser Shamsuzzaman Dudu.
He came up with the allegation while briefing reporters about the 18-party’s nationwide hartal that was called off nearly two and a half hours ahead of its schedule.
The opposition alliance enforced the 36-hour shutdown at 6am on Tuesday to press home their various demands, including the release of top BNP leaders.
The hartal was scheduled to end at 6.00pm Wednesday, but the alliance called it off around 3:30pm following a building collapse near Savar bus stand on the outskirt of the capital on Wednesday that claimed over 100 lives.
Addressing the briefing, Dudu alleged that the government arrested and harassed many opposition leaders and activists across the country during the hartal hours.
“The ruling party armed cadres killed Jubo Dal leader Emon in Chapainawabganj and BNP activists Rustam Ali in Mehepur during Wednesday’s hartal hours,” the BNP leader told the briefing.
He also claimed that police arrested over 300 opposition activists across the country during the hartal hours on Tuesday and Wednesday, while more than 446 injured in attacks by law enforcers and ‘ruling party cadres’ in two days.
“Besides, some 900 BNP men were implicated in false cases.” Dudu said people allover the country observed the hartal with their spontaneous support and made it a success despite various obstacles and repressive acts by the government.
Reiterating the opposition’s demand for restoration of the caretaker government system to oversee the next general election, the BNP chairperson’s adviser said, “Still, there’s time meet our demand to resolve the ongoing political crisis and anarchy.” UNB
