Dhaka, Jul 29 (UNB) – BNP on Monday demanded resignation of the Health Minister and the two Dhaka city mayors for their failure to check the outbreak of dengue and eliminate Aedes mosquito.
“Dengue has spread like epidemic across the country. We’re observing with disappointment and anger that the government messed up the dengue crisis. The city mayors are making various remarks that don’t match the reality,” said BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.
He came up with the demand at a press briefing after a meeting of BNP standing committee member at its chairperson’s Gulshan office.
“The two mayors should quit for their miserable failure to eliminate the mosquito. We also demand the health minister, who has failed to monitor the situation and take effective preventing steps, also resign.”
He said though icddr,b warned about the ineffectiveness of the insecticide the two city corporations used to kill mosquitoes, the authorities did not take any step to procure the effective one.
As the dengue situation turned critical, the BNP leader said, their party has decided to distribute leaflets among people to make them aware of the disease.
Besides, he said, they have decided to take part in the by-polls to Rampur-3 constituency that fell vacant with the death of Jatiya Party Chairman HM Ershad.
Fakhrul said their standing committee entrusted party acting chairman Tarique Rahman with all the responsibilities to pick the party candidate for the by-election.
He said their meeting voiced deep concern over the flood situation as well and demanded the government provide the affected farmers with free seeds, fertilizer and other necessary agro-inputs.
They also demanded that the agricultural loan of the flood-hit farmers be waived.
