Rajshahi, March 02 – The Rajshahi University authority on Monday had a meeting at the senate building of the university with the Population Science and Human Resource Development department students, who were waging a movement demanding change in the name of their department name to ‘Applied Statistics’.After hearing speeches of the department teachers and students university vice-chancellor Professor M Abdus Sobhan said, it’s not impossible to rename the department and if it would change, identity problem of the pass-outs will not be solved. The university authority will work on including the subject code of the department in the Public Service Commission (PSC).
The meeting was started at 3.30 pm on Monday and ended at around 8 pm. Teachers and students presented their logic behind the movement at the meeting.
Students said the department couldn’t get identity even after 24 years have passed. Students face problem in PSC for not having subject code. There is no department named as Population Science in any other university in Bangladesh. ‘So we demand inclusion of the subject code in PSC. Maximum courses of our department do match with Applied Statistics syllabus and now we demand to get renamed our department as subject code is not included yet.’
Some students told this reporter after the meeting that the meeting was not fruitful. They got little chance to talk at the meeting. They are not satisfied with the decision. They will take up their next program after discussing with the department teachers on Tuesday.
Pro vice-chancellor Professor Choudhury M Zakaria, Registrar Professor MA Bari, among others were present at the meeting. – RU Correspondent
