Design for walkover by convicting Khaleda in false cases: BNP

BNP yesterday alleged that the government wants to get a walkover by convicting party chairperson Khaleda Zia implicating her in false cases.

“The government is trying to convict Khaleda Zia by setting special tribunal and implicating her in false cases since she could not be convicted under traditional and speedy trial laws,” said BNP standing committee member Nazrul Islam Khan while speaking an iftar mahfil organised by Sramik Dal at Mahbub Ali auditorium at Shajahanpur.

He criticised Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s statements that the government has a plan to set up a special tribunal for Khaleda’s trial.

The BNP leader’s comments two days after the Prime Minister told Parliament that the government is planning to set up a special tribunal to expedite the trial involving ex-Prime Minister Khaleda Zia Khaleda who was accused of instigating anarchy and destruction during the anti-government movement earlier this year.

He alleged that all the AL leaders are playing flutes in happiness that they would have an easy sail in next election is Khaleda Zia is kept out of the poll. “Because, AL will never win the polls, if Khaleda contests a free fair election,” he added

Meanwhile, addressing a discussion meeting at Jatiya Press Club, BNP vice chairman Shah Moazzem Hossain said the government give a careful though to set a special tribunal to try Khaleda as the AL leaders may be tried there when they would be in opposition.

“Give a careful thought before setting up special tribunal to try Khaleda Zia. It may be possible to try the AL leaders when they will be in opposition,” he said.

The veteran politician said not only Syed Ashraf,  the entire nation wants relieve of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

“You (government) know better as to why Ashraful Islam was removed from the cabinet of illegal government. But removal of Ashraful Islam from cabinet is not enough but country’s people want relieve of present government,” he said.

Terming Food Minister Quamrul Islam as ‘minister of insects’ infested wheat imported from Brazil, he said the government removed a good minister like Ashraful Islam instead of dropping him (Quamrul).

Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Nagorik Dal organised the meeting demanding the release of all BNP leaders and activists including acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir before the Eid.

Shahjada Syed Omar Faruque, president of the organisation and Juba Dal president Syed Moazzem Hossain Alal, also spoke on the occasion. – Staff Reporter
