Detergent, antibiotics found in milk samples

Dhaka, June 25 (UNB)— Researchers have found traces of detergent and antibiotics in samples of pasteurised and unpasteurised milk produced by several companies.

Products of Pran, MilK Vita, Igloo, Aarong, and Farm Fresh were tested.

All seven samples of pasteurised milk were found to contain antibiotics used to treat humans, according to Prof ABM Faruque, director of Biomedical Research Centre.

Ten samples – seven pasteurised and three unpasteurised – were tested by Dhaka University’s Pharmacy Faculty and Biomedical Research Centre.

Detergent was detected in three samples of pasteurised and an unpasteurised one, Prof Faruque told a press conference at Dhaka University on Tuesday.

“The traces of antibiotics that we found were meant for human use. Antibiotics for humans and animals are totally different. We need to stop the use of antibiotics meant for humans on animals,” he said.
