Dhaka, Sept 5 (UNB) – Dhaka has ranked third worst liveable city in the Global Liveability Index 2019 while Vienna of Austria the finest liveable city in the world.
The index placed war-torn Syrian capital Damascus and Lagos to the least liveable cities.
The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) publishes an annual Global Liveability Ranking, which ranks 140 cities of the world assessing urban quality of life based on stability, healthcare, culture and environment, education and infrastructure.
Bangladesh’s capital made a slight progress and went up one notch up as it ranked at the second least liveable city in 2018.
Dhaka as the 138th of 140 received an overall rating of 39.2 (100-ideal) in 2019 index.
The capital of Bangladesh received 55 for stability, 29.2 for healthcare, 40.5 for culture and environment, 41.7 for education and 26.8 in infrastructure.
The only Asian country Japan’s Osaka (97.7) and Tokyo (97.2) cities placed fourth and seventh liveable cities in 2019. Osaka placed third in 2018.
In India, New Delhi and Mumbai rank 118th and 119th according to the EIU Global Liveability Index 2019.
Meanwhile, Karachi of Pakistan was ranked 136th liveable city this year.
Australia’s Melbourne (98.4) and Sydney (98.1) ranked second and third best liveable cities, according to the global index.
Vienna maintained a near-ideal 99.1, separating it from Melbourne by 0.7 points.
Melbourne had been ranked the world’s most liveable city for seven years in a row, from 2011 to 2017 by the EIU.
The Syrian capital, Damascus, was ranked the least liveable city of the 140 assessed in 2018 and 2019, reflecting the effects of conflict in the country.
