Dhaka slums to have legal water supply by 2017

Dhaka: Local Government and Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister Khandker Mosharraf Hossain on Wednesday said the government has set a target to provide legal water supply to the slum dwellers of Dhaka by next year. UNB News Agency Reported.
The LGRD Minister came up with the information while addressing a function over supply of water among Kalshi slum dwellers at Krishibid Institution Auditorium in city’s Farmgate area, as a chief guest.
Getting drinking water is a fundamental right of people and it is the responsibility of Dhaka Water Supply and Sewerage Authority (Dwasa) to ensure the right for the inhabitants of Dhaka, said Mosharraf Hossain.
Dwaqsa has launched a separate department named community programme and consumer relations department aiming to ensure water supply for slum dwellers from 2010, he said.
Funded by Unicef, some 278 water connections have been handed over to 6000 families of Kalshi slum, Mirpur at the programme. The cost of per unit water (1000 Litter) was fixed at Tk 8.49, he added.
