Dhaka South Mayor asks for demolishing illegal building

Dhaka, March 31 – Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Mayor Mohammad Sayeed Khokon yesterday challenged Rajdhani Unnyan Katripakkha (RAJUK) to demolish a building owned by an influential person.
“No one in the city believes that any building owned by an influential person could be demolished. I am asking them to demolish one, just for the sake of setting up an example,” he said.
Sayeed Khokon said those while speaking at roundtable discussion titled “Fire Hazards and Safety Management” organized by the State University of Bangladesh at the Yakub South Centre in Kalabagan area of the capital.
He said, “RAJUK should act pro-actively in preventing a building from being erected violating the construction permit. It is impossible for RAJUK now to demolish those illegal buildings if they want to.”
Khokon claimed that around 5,500 buildings have been built illegally in the capital.
He said, “Does RAJUK have the capability to demolish those buildings? After demolish, can they build a new one there? It is an impossible matter. But, those buildings have not been built in one day. Someone among us violated  the law and did any of these buildings illegally. Our citizens have done it.”
Khokon said, “This problem was not created in one day. Year after year, it had created through mismanagement, negligence, and disenchantment. We all must need to aware in the matter of fire.”
