Gono Forum chief Dr. Kamal Hossain on Sunday underscored the need for a national dialogue to resolve the prevailing political crisis. He said 16 crore people of the country want peace, security of life and property. All people fear if they would return after coming out of homes. Consensus on the basic rights is urgent, he said.
Meanwhile, Nagorik Oikya convener Mahmudur Rahman Manna said that no government force work if the people rise against the injustices and repressions of the government. He also strongly criticised the police obstruction to the movement of BNP chief Begum Khaleda Zia.Dr. Kamal Hossain was talking to journalists after an emergency meeting of political leaders to decide on the course of action in view of the growing tension over the Jan 5 programmes of the government and the main opposition. Mahmudur Rahman was addressing a discussion meeting on O5 Januaruy election and democracy in Bangladesh organised at the Jatiya Press Club by the Swadhinata Prajanma Bangladesh central committee.
Dr. Kamal Hossain said that the citizens occupied a special place in the affairs of the country. January 05 has created an abnormal situation and a political crisis in the country. A national dialogue was needed to overcome the crisis, he said. The meeting was attended by Nagorik Oikya chief Mahmudur Rahman Manna, JSD president ASM Abdur Rob and Bikalpa Dhara secretary general Major (retd) Abdul Mannan.
Manna told the discussion meeting at the press club that Begum Khaleda Zia was confined without any reason. But she cannot be withheld for long using sand laden truck, he said. He said that BNP leaders and workers had done little although their party chief was obstructed from moving freely.
Supreme Court Bar leader and BNP chairperson’s adviser Khondkar Mahbub Hossain said that the government had so long confined democracy, now they were confining the BNP chief. The people of all strata of the society should join the movement to free democracy by observing ‘democracy killing day’ without any further delay. Referring to the role of security forcer he said that none should be overenthusiastic the serve the interests of only one party. Those would do so might find the future of their upcoming generations in jeopardy. – News Desk
