Discussions on disable persons held in Faridpur

A daylong Focus Group Discussion (FGD) for obtaining recommendations and suggestions on the Shadow Report of United Nations Conventions on
the Rights of the persons with Disabilities (UN CRPD) was held here on Saturday.
The FGD was organized jointly by UK based Action on Disability and Development (ADD) International, National Grassroots Disability Organization (NGDO) and National Council of Disabled Women (NCDW).It may be mentioned here that Bangladesh as a signatory of CRPD has enacted a new law through legislation by the Jatiyo Sangsad for the welfare of the various kinds of disabled persons of the country. The new law got effect from Oct 9, 2013. It may be noted that ten percent people of our country are victims of disability. The government enacted the new law as the compliance report required to be sent to UN.The FGD was held to gather recommendations from the people for improvements and certain changes to make the new law more humane and pragmatic.In the discussion meeting Advocate Khondoker Shahriyar Sakir of ADD International explained the new law enacted by the government containing 44 articles with a number of sub-articles.He urged upon the government to bring some changes in the law to certain articles for ensuring rights and protection of the disable persons with the conception of Reasonable Accommodation in the society.The FGD was chaired by President of Surjodauia Protibandhi Sangstha Abdur RAB Rasel while ADC (Gen) M Jahangir Hossain attended as the chief guest. -BSS, Faridpur
