‘Doesn’t matter who participates in polls’

The remark of the Prime Minister comes amid opposition’s threat to boycott the election.

Amid opposition’s threat to boycott the next parliamentary election if the government does not restore the caretaker government system before it, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Sunday said the election would be held as per schedule without waiting for anyone.

“The Prime Minister said the 10th national election will take place on schedule. It is not a matter of concern to see who joins it or not,” one of the ruling party MPs, who attended the Awami League’s parliamentary party meeting, told bdnews24.com, on conditions of anonymity.

The two-hour long meeting, presided over by party President Hasina, was held after the 16th Jatiya Sangsad’s session started.

According to the 15th Amendment of the Constitution, the next parliamentary election will be held under a partisan government.

BNP, however, have been demonstrating for a non-partisan government to oversee the next election, questioning the fairness of any election under a partisan government.

Given the conflicting positions by the ruling and the main opposition parties, diplomats have called for a dialogue between the two sides.
