Heavy shower Wednesday morning flooded many streets in the Sylhet, causing immense sufferings
to schoolchildren and office goers.
The incessant rain that continued for several hours from 10:00am also caused water stagnation and
severe tailbacks across the city.
The working commuters were the worst sufferers, as many of them had to wade through the
stagnant water or got soaked in rain water for scarcity of vehicles to carry them to their work places.
Witnesses said many roads and residential areas in the Sylhet went under ankle- to waist-deep
water.
The areas include Station road, Lawai, Kadomtaly, Mirabazar, Shibganj, Raynogor, Modinamarket,
Medical road, Subidbazar and Zindabazar.
Many CNGs or cars came to a standstill as their engines went out of order in water on different
roads, triggering tailbacks and causing further plight to the commuters.
Rasheda Khatun, who was travelling by a CNG to reach her office, said she left the CNG stuck at
Kadomtaly and walked down for one hours to Surma market from Amborkhana.
Tawkit Ahmed, a resident of Bhartokhola, said it also took him several hours to reach Zinda Bazar.
He was critical of the authorities by saying that every monsoon the city dwellers suffer for waterstagnation but no step was taken ever to address the problem permanently.
Sylhet Water Supply and Sewerage Authority superintending engineer said that stagnant water on
the city roads would be cleared in three to four hours.
Due to wastes and high water level in the nearby rivers some city areas faced water stagnation, he
