Dhaka – Bangladesh Bank Governor Dr. Atiur Rahman has been declared the Central Bank Governor of the Year for Asia 2015 by The Emerging Markets Newspaper (UK based financial newspaper of the Euromoney Group), signifying the growing recognition and confidence in policymaking he has spearheaded at Bangladesh Bank towards mainstreaming socially and environmentally responsible inclusive green financing, supporting sustainable socioeconomic development. Governor Rahman will receive the award at the Annual Awards Reception on October 10, 2015 evening in the presence of the Governors and Finance Ministers gathered on the occasion of the 2015 World Bank/IMF Annual Meetings in Lima, Peru.In his offer letter, Toby Fildes, the Managing Editor of Emerging Markets said, ‘Your award is based on nominations from public and private sector economists, analysts, bankers, investors, and other experts. The award signals the confidence you have inspired in your key stakeholders and reflects their faith in central bank policy under your stewardship’. Last year, Dr. Raghuram Rajan, Governor of the Reserve Bank of India was awarded this prestigious accolade, and Dr. Zhou Xiaochuan, Governor of the People’s Bank of China received the same in 2013. For his socially responsible inclusive green financing initiatives, Dr. Rahman has earned many other international and local awards like Indira Gandhi Gold Plaque from India, the best Central Bank Governor – Asia Pacific 2015 by the Banker Magazine (a Financial Times publication), Gusi International Peace Prize from the Philippines, World No-Tobacco Day Award 2012 by the World Health Organization (WHO), Certificate of World Record (2012) by the World Record Association, for carrying out the highest number of inclusive and pro-poor programs by any central bank Governor, National ICT Award 2015 in the Lifetime Achievement Award category for his technology friendly practical policies, Regulator with a Human Face (2014) by University of Dhaka, and Sheltech Award (2010) for his contribution in financial sector development of Bangladesh.
