EC ‘complains’ about Amu violating code of conduct

The Election Commission has informed the Prime Minister about alleged violation of code of conduct by Industries Minister Amir Hossain Amu during the fourth phase of the Upazila Parishad elections.
EC Joint Secretary Jesmin Tuli told journalists on Monday of the development. However, she could not say why the EC went to apprise Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina of the issue without taking any step against the minister for the breach.
On 21 Mar, Amu had allegedly introduced an Awami League candidate to people at a ceremony at Jhalakathi’s Rajapur and sought vote for him, which the EC says is a clear breach.Awami League Upazila chairman candidate Moniruzzaman won the election. The EC sent a letter to the Prime Minister through the Cabinet Division on Sunday, the day the fourth phase of the Upazila polls was held.
EC officials said they had also received a complaint against former minister and current MP Rajiuddin Ahmed Raju over the violation.
Raju and his wife allegedly intimidated voters and tried to lure them with monetary benefit to work for his chosen candidate, the Awami League-backed Mizanur Rahman at Narsinghdi’s Raipur Upazila, they said.
Based on a complaint from Mizanur’s opponent Mohammad Shamsul Haque, the matter was brought to the notice of Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury, the EC officials said.
Polling in Narsinghdi’s Raipur Upazila will be held in the fifth phase on Mar 31.-bdnews24.com
