EC happy over 3rd phase UZ polls

The Election Commission on Saturday said the elections in 81 upazila of 41 districts were largely free and peaceful.
“The polls were held in a free and fair manner barring some stray incidents… we’re happy,” said Election Commissioner Mohammad Abdul Mobarak, who is performing the duties of the Chief Election Commissioner, in the evening. He said voting at 26 polling stations in 13 upazila parishads was suspended. “In terms of number, the figure is negligible. There has been no suspension of voting in any entire upazila.”
About violence, he said it is usual that stray incidents of violence can take place during any election. “It’s not possible to know beforehand about the probable incidents of violence. We’ve taken actions in the places where there was violence.”
“Those who were involved in the violence won’t be spared. Cases will be filed against them,” Mobarak warned.
Replying to a query how many people were killed in Saturday’s elections, the commissioner said anyone can die anytime for any reason.
The elections in the 81 upazila were held today in the third phase of the local body election.
