EC search committee places 10 names to President

Dhaka, Feb 6 – The search committee Monday submitted 10 names to President Abdul Hamid for appointing new chief election commissioner (CEC) and four commissioners from among those.The search panel had a meeting with the President at Bangabhaban.
The search body chief Supreme Court’s Appellate Division Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain placed the list to Abudl Hamid at the meeting that began around 6:30pm, said a source at Bangabhaban.
Earlier, the search panel in their last meeting finalised the names 10 people to propose those to President.
Talking to reporters after the meeting. additional cabinet secretary Abdul Wadud said 10 names have been picked from the names submitted by 25 political parties to it.
Asked whether the search committee’s proposed names will be made public, Wadud said it will l be decided after the meeting with the President.
On January 25 last, the President formed the search committee, headed by Supreme Court’s Appellate Division Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain, to propose prospective names of CEC and other commissioners by February 8 as the tenure of the current EC expires next week.
The search panel talked to 16 noted citizens and took their opinions about the reconstitution of the EC.
Abdul Hamid will appoint no more than five persons to the EC from the names recommended by the search committee.
A gazette notification in this regard will be issued by February 8, the additional cabinet secretary said. – UNB
