ECNEC nods 11 dev projects

The government has taken massive development programmes for power sector to increase electricity generation for meeting the increasing demand.

The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) on Tuesday approved five projects for power sector involving Tk 5,298 crore.

The approval came from a meeting held at the NEC conference room at Shere-E-Bangla Nagar in the city with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, also ECNEC chairperson, in the chair.

Three of the five power sector projects aim at increasing production and the remaining two at ensuring proper and dependable transmission and supply of electricity among the clients.

After the meeting, Planning Division Secretary Bhuiyan Shafiqul Islam informed that a total of 11 development projects involving Tk 6,459 crore were approved.

JICA, ADB, IDB and European Investment Bank will provide Tk 4,233 crore for these projects. The remaining amount of Tk 1,065 crore will come from the national exchequer.

He added: “Of the total cost, Tk 2,226 crore will come from the national exchequer while the remaining Tk 4,233 crore will come as project assistance.”

The projects approved in the meeting are Strengthening of Hazi Mohammad Danesh Science and Technology University Project (Tk 76.29 crore-GoB); Protection of left bank of the Padma River from Komarpara of Ishwardi Upazilla under Pabna district to Tilakpur- Gouripur of Natore district through Sara Jhaudia (Tk 220 crore- GoB); Protecting Bairagir Hat and Chilmari Bandar under Chilmari and Ulipur Upazilla of Kurigram district from the right bank- erosion of the Brahmaputra river (Tk 191 crore-GoB);

Ministers, advisers to the Prime Minister, members of the Planning Commission, Secretaries and officials concerned were present in the meeting.banglanews24.com
