PM’s dig at BNP

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Tuesday warned of tough action against those trying to cause disruptions for protecting the ‘war criminals’ active during 1971 Liberation War.

The Jamaat-e-Islami has gone in for regular strikes and their supporters have caused mayhem to back their demand for a repeal of the war crimes tribunals. On Tuesday, they called for a nationwide whole-day strike demanding repeal of the war crimes trials and release of their leaders facing the trials.

“Those who are engaged in violence to save them are equally guilty,” Hasina said during the oath-taking ceremony of the Rangpur Mayor and the councillors.

She issued strong warning to stop the violence. “Or else consequences would be worse.”

One bank official was burnt to death when Jamaat supporters set fire to a bus on Monday night at Dhaka’s Uttara locality..

She called upon all pro-liberation forces to unite and resist the Jamaat-e-Islami.

The oath-taking ceremony was conducted by LGRD Minister Syed Ashraful Islam. The first Mayor of Rangpur, Sharfuddin Ahmed Jhantu and 44 Councillors were sworn into office on Tuesday. 11 of the councillors were women.
