Election Commission subservient to PM: Gayeswar

BNP standing committee member Goyeshwar Chandra Roy yesterday alleged that the Election Commission (EC) has become a subservient of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
“The EC is no longer the real EC. It has turned into a loyalist institute of Sheikh Hasina,” he said while addressing a human chain programme in front of the National Press Club.The BNP leader said the EC has become naked by holding the January 5 parliamentary polls and it should not have shown much more nakedness through upazila parishad elections.
Doctors Association of Bangladesh (DAB) organised the programme demanding the withdrawal of ban on publication of dainik Amardesh and the release of its editor Mahmudur Rahman.
Goyeshwar criticised the government to allow corridor for India to supply power without finalising the accounts of losses and profit of the country.
He said India would use about 4,500 bighs of Bangladesh’s land which would be abandoned.
The BNP leader further said India would set up tower for power and might demand for deploy their own force for their security.
He warned that the fall of government is imminent even if Khaleda or BNP do not go for movement.
Goyeshwar accused the government of politicising the judiciary and depriving people from justice.
He claimed that Ziaur Rahman was President of Bangladesh even for a day in 1971. He also questioned who lead the war of liberation before formation of Mujibnagar government on April 17 in 1971.
Presided over by DAB vice-president MA Salam, the function was also addressed, among others, by BNP leader Abdullah Al Noman, convenor of Peshajibi Somonnoy Parishad Ruhul Amin Gazi, BFUJ president MA Aziz, DU teacher Prof AFM Yusuf Haider, secretary of National Press Club Syed Abdal Ahmed. DAB secretary general Dr AZM Zahid Hossain moderated the programme.
Meanwhile, BNP joint secretary general Salahuddin Ahmed in a statement condemned and protested sending of Secchasebok Dal president Habib-un-Nabi Khan Sohel to jail by rejecting his bail plea on Sunday.
He demanded immediate and unconditional release of Sohel and withdrawal of false cases filed against him. – Staff Reporter
