Election officer suspended for power abuse

Additional regional election officer of Khulna M Abul Hossain was suspended on charge of violating rules and abusing power as the returning officer of Kalaroa Municipality election slated for 30 December, reports news agency UNB.The Election Commission issued a notification in this regard on Sunday.Signed by senior assistant secretary Sabid-ur Rahman, the notification said Abul Hossain, being Satkhira district election officer and the returning officer of Kalaroa Municipality, illegally accepted the nomination paper of Kalaroa upazila vice chairman Aminul Islam for the mayoral post and declared it valid during scrutiny.It said Abul Hossain committed punishable offence under the Government Servants (Discipline and Appeal) Rules, 1985 by accepting the nomination paper of Amir Hossain, who is still vice chairman of Upazila vice chairman, illegally abusing power with ill-motive.
Under the circumstances, Satkhira district election officer Abul Hossain was suspended under section 11 (1) of the same rules, the notification added.Earlier, the Election Commission withdrew him from the posts of district election officer and the returning officer of Kalaroa Municipality on the same charge.A deputy secretary of the EC Secretariat told UNB that the Commission awarded the punishment to the official as he declared valid to the nomination paper ignoring instructions of two election commissioners.When Aminul Islam filed his mayoral nomination paper not quitting vice chairman post of upazila Parishad, the issue came to the notice of the Election Commission, he said.Election commissioners Mohammad Abdul Mobarak and Shah Nawaz instructed the returning officer not to accept the nomination papers over phone, but he declared the nomination paper valid during scrutiny, the EC official said.
