Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has reiterated that the next general elections will be held as per Bangladesh’s Constitution.By stating this she has effectively rejected opposition BNP’s demand for restoration of the caretaker system to oversee the polls.
“We have to start it (staging election under partisan government) eventually,” Hasina told Awami League’s advisory council meeting at Ganabhaban on Saturday.
Hasina also reminded the opposition about the Supreme Court verdict over the matter.
The next parliamentary elections will be held under the incumbent government, for it has amended the Constitution, scrapping the caretaker provision.
The BNP, however, has since been on the streets, threatening to boycott the elections if it were not held under a non-party government. It has been alleging that a free and fair election could not be held under a partisan government.
