Electronic voting machines being used in Rangpur by-election

Dhaka, Sept 30 – The upcoming by-election to the Rangpur-3 constituency would be held using Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), EC sources said. EC has sent necessary EVMs for holding polls, training and demonstration to the officer of the Returning Officer.
The election would be held on October 5 and before it necessary steps would be taken for making the machines familiar to the voters, polling agents and mock voting will also be held on October 3.
Meanwhile, Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Nurul Huda yesterday in Rangpur said, “EVM is a tested method for holding polls. Election can be held within a short time.”
“The Rangpur by-election would be held with the EMVs. Earlier votes in Rangpur Sadar upazila were held with EVMs. There is no lapses and irregularities in the EMVs. It would also be used in general election,” he added.
In reply to a query that much time was needed due to technical problem of EVM in the earlier elections in Rangpur, he said, “There might have technical problems with the machines. It was repaired and votes were held.”
After the meeting at the conference room of deputy commissioner’s office, CEC told the journalists that there was nothing to be worried about the bye-election. “We have taken all necessary preparations for holding fair elections. All sorts of troubles would be tackled.”
He hoped the by-election to Rangpur-3 would be held in a festive mood.
CEC also said, “We hope voters would come to the centres to cast their votes. Nobody would be able to prevent them. Votes would be stopped if voters are prevented. I can assure that all candidates would get equal rights in the election.”
He also said the law enforcers including RAB and police would remain alert to take action against the troublemakers.
“Candidates, their supporters and voters have interest in this election. There will be no problem in the election. All including administration has a keen eye on it,” he added.
In reply to a query of holding the poll amid the Durga Puja, he said, “Arrangements have been taken so that Puja can be held properly. We have had a talk with the Puja committee. The by-elections have to be held with the timeframe of the Constitution.” – Staff Reporter
