Empower women for enhancing their dignity

According to a  report of the human rights wing of the UN, one-third of women are raped or physically tortured during their life, which is around one billion across the world. To raise awareness and to end of violence against women including rape, every year on the 14th of February many programmes including seminar, meetings in public places are held, banner and festoons are displayed and leaflets distributed.According to the report from the police department, around two hundred million women were tortured – raped, murdered after rape, acid burnt or beaten for dowry in Bangladesh during the one and a half year from 2011 to June, 2012.
I had an opportunity to work for a women empowerment project a couple of years ago. During my work closely with women, I found many women are differently treated at their in-laws’ houses and as well as their own families. Women teachers could teach for one year in the rural secondary schools through our project and after completing teaching they were sent to Teachers Training Colleges to get their B. Ed degrees. After completing B. Ed degrees, they were capable enough to get teaching jobs in the rural secondary schools. Not a very long ago, women teachers were hardly found even in the urban schools. Math and Science teachers were preferred under this project. Around three thousand women got teaching jobs in the rural schools under this project named PROMTE.
It is found that educated persons have one or two children but the illiterate people have many children and some have many wives also. They unknowingly create problems in our society. If we educate the nation properly I think we need not waste money in contraceptive related projects.
We have been using a huge amounts of money for seminar, meeting, printing festoons, leaflets and doing other activities in the name of work for women. Can these help those who are trapped and work as sex worker in the brothel or street girls who tortured every day? I would like to request those concerned to initiate more projects like PROMTE for women empowerment and as well as upholding their dignity in our families, the society and the state.
