BNP on Thursday demanded the increase of salary and dignity of teachers in the public universities and withdrawal of VAT (value added tax) on private universities.
The party also extended its support to the movement of public university teachers for separate pay scale for them and called upon the private university students to carryout their movement peacefully.“All concerned including education ministry, respective minister and secretary should resolve the matter before the ongoing movement deteriorates further,” said BNP spokesperson Dr Asaduzzaman Ripon while addressing a press conference at party headquarters at Naya Paltan in the city.
He said there is no reflection about the implementation of the demands of public university teachers in the newly announced 8th national pay scale.
The BNP leader argued that the salaries and allowances of public university are far less than that of university teachers of neibourhg countries.
Regarding VAT on private universities, he said the BNP had opposed it soon after announcement the national budget and still it is demanding for withdrawal of VAT.
BNP vice-chairman Altaf Hossain Chowdhury, SM Abdul Halim, Barrister Ziaur Rahman, Khairul Kabir Khokan and Habibur Rahman Habib, among others, were present on the occasion.
Meanwhile, in a statement to mark the 8th jail release day of BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia, the BNP spokeperson said the former premier is continuing her fight against the forces of evil and to restore the rights of frainchise.
Begum Khaleda Zia along with her younger son Arafat Rahman Koko had been arrested in GATCO graft case on September 3 in 2007. She was freed from a makeshift prison after one year and seven days. – Staff Reporter
