Dhaka, July 17 (UNB) – President M Abdul Hamid on Wednesday asked the government and other agencies concerned to take specific measures to ensure security at all the courts, including the High Court, across the country.
He made the directives when a delegation of Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA), led by its President AM Aminuddin, met him at Bangabhaban in the afternoon and sought his cooperation to this end.
The SCBA team raised the issue following the killing of a murder accused by another accused in front of a judge in the courtroom of Cumilla on Monday.
During the meeting, it also apprised the President of its overall activities.
Terming the judiciary people’s last resort to seek justice, the President said it is essential to ensure security of all the courts, including the High Court.
He expressed the hope that the government will take specific measures to this end.
The SCBA delegation demanded formulation of a policy for the appointment of judges at the High Court.
In reply, Hamid assured them of his cooperation in this regard.
Describing lawyers as an inevitable part of the process of justice, the President said they play an important role in ensuring justice.
He urged them to discharge their duties without any bias towards and against anyone and uphold the reputation of the profession.
Hamid also advised the lawyers to be more helpful to justice-seekers so that no one is deprived of proper legal assistance due to financial crisis.
The other delegation members included SCBA Senior Vice-president Abdul Baten, Vice-president Md Jasim Uddin and Secretary AM Mahbub Uddin Khokon.
Secretaries concerned to the Bangabhaban were also present during the meeting.
