Ensuring human rights, dignity of disabled persons stressed

Discussants at an advocacy conference have stressed for ensuring human rights, honour and dignity of the disabled population to establish their socioeconomic and political rights like all others in the society.

Without mainstreaming the disabled persons with the national development activities at all levels through ensuring their all human rights as per the concerned UN Charter, sustainable socioeconomic developments could not be achieved, they said.

They also demanded immediate implementation of the concerned UN Charter on the rights of persons with disabilities to ensure their welfare in the country and throughout the globe as a whole.

They were addressing the advocacy conference on ‘UN Charter for Persons with Disabilities’ at Raja Ram Mohan Club auditorium on Monday afternoon in the city.

Jatiyo Trinomul Protibandhi Sangstha (JTPS), Protibandhi Narider Jatiyo Sangstha, Bangladesh Legal Aid and Services Trust (BLAST) and Rangpur Zila Rangdhanu Protibandhi Adhikar Sangstha (RZPAS) organised the conference under financial assistances of the UK-based Disability Rights Fund.

With President of RZPAS Nur Alam in the chair, Additional District Magistrate of Rangpur Tonima Tasmin attended and addressed the conference as the chief guest. Head of the Department of Medicine of Rangpur Medical College Professor Dr Zakir Hossain, noted educationist Professor Maloy Bhattacharya, President of Raja Ram Mohan Club Monwar Hossain and journalists Mahbub Rahman Habu addressed as the special guests.

President of Mahiganj Press Club Bablu Nag, Coordinator of BLAST Advocate Nasima Khanum, ADD International Official Marufa Begum, noted women activist Marhamatun Nesa, JTPS leader Aklima Khatun and RZPAS leader Shahidar Rahman also spoke.

Over one hundred participants including government and NGO officials and experts, disabled leaders, lawyers, journalists, public representatives, professionals and local elite took part.

The speakers discussed various articles, rules, regulations and importance of the UN Charter on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and stressed for implementation of the Charter to ensure rights, welfare, dignity and honour of the disabled population.

They called upon the state, government, society and everyone for engaging their due efforts in a coordinated manner for mainstreaming the disabled population who are also the integral parts of the society as well as humanity as a whole. -BSS, Rangpur
