BNP-backed mayoral runner in Gazipur City Corporation polls MA Mannan on Tuesday claimed that Jatiya Party chairman HM Ershad give him both moral support and blessings to win the election. But, the Jatiya Party Chief denied giving any support to Mannan.
“I came to Jatiya Party chairman, who is like my political mentor, to have his blessings. He gave me both blessings and moral support,” Mannan told reporters emerging from Ershad’s Baridhara residence.
Earlier on Monday, Awami League-backed mayoral candidate Ajmat Ullah Khan also met Ershad and sought his support and blessings for winning the mayoral race slated for July 6.
Ershad reportedly gave Ajmat only his blessings.
As Gazipur is Jatiya Party’s stronghold, Mannan following the suit of Ajmat came to Ershad’s place around 6:30pm and held around a 30-minute meeting with him.
Mentioning that he had earlier got support from the local leaders and activists of the Jatiya Party, Manna claimed that he also secured Ershad’s support at the meeting.
Contacted, Ershad told UNB, “It’s a local body election. There’re is no scope to extend any party support to anybody. He (Mannan) came to me to seek by blessings. I gave him my blessings; that’s it.” (Source: UNB)
