Even 5 million police can’t save government: Fakhrul

BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir yesterday said the government ultimately would not be able to save itself even with five million police.
Addressing a discussion meeting at Institute of Engineers Bangladesh to mark the Victory Day, he alleged that the government is preparing a list for killing and enforced disappearence to resist the anti-government movement.
“Ultimately the government will not be able to protect itself. Being isolated form the people the government now is trying to cling to power depending on police and the Rapid Action Battalion,” he said.Referring to the government move to recruit further 50,000 police personnel, the BNP leader made it clear that not only 50,000 police, the government would not be able to protect them using five million police as what he said 18 core people have taken p position against them.
On January 5 poll, he said the government had put last nail to the coffin of democracy.
“The democracy is now dead, democracy has become martyred. The government has established undeclared one-party rule in the country after the poll,” he added.
Fakhrul, who presided over the meeting, called upon the party activists as well as people to take preparation to take to the streets to restore the country’s democracy.
Criticizing the post independent Awami League government, he said people had joined the BAKSAL by staying in queue but that did not work. “The situation changed after the August 15 incident,” he added.
He cautioned the government that it has been taking wrong steps one after another by depending on police and RAB.
The BNP spokesperson criticised the prime minister for her “aggressive remarks” against Khaleda Zia.
