A former Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) leader was hacked to death by unidentified miscreants in the city’s Moghbazar area on Thursday evening.
The deceased was identified as Mahbubur Rahman Rana, 32, former senior vice-president of Ramna thana unit of the ruling Awami League’s student wing.
Son of late Mozibur Rahman, Rana had been residing at Chairmangoli of Moghbazar.
Quoting witnesses, police said a gang of miscreants swooped on Rana at Masjid Goli near Moghbazar crossing around 6:30 pm.
The gangsters exploded two crude bombs to create panic and chopped Rana indiscriminately with sharp weapons. Later, they fled the scene, leaving him in a pool of blood.
The former BCL leader was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where doctors declared him dead at about 8:05pm.
Contacted, deputy commissioner (Ramna Division) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police Maruf Sheikh said police recovered a machete and two unexploded crude bombs from the spot.
