Ex RAB officers Tareque, Arif shown arrested

A court here on Thursday placed former Rab officials — Tareque Sayeed Mohammad and Arif Hossain — on a fresh eight-day remand in connection with the sensational Narayanganj seven-murder case.   Senior Judicial Magistrate KM Mahiuddin passed the order when Detective Branch of Police Inspector Mamunur Rashid Mondal produced them before his court on the expiry of their five-day remand. The IO prayed to the court for showing the two former officers of Rapid Action Battalion-11 arrested in the case, saying many evidence suggest that they were involved in the seven murders, and sought a 10-day remand for them.   After hearing, the court put the duo on eight days’ remand.   Meanwhile, lawyers present at the courtroom assaulted the two former Rab officers while they were being taken from the custody. The angry lawyers also beat a lawyer of Dhaka Bar — Advocate Mozammel Haque — who registered his name to stand for the accused Rab officials.   Former Rab officer Lt Commander MM Rana is now on a seven-day remand in connection with the killing of seven people, including Narayanganj City panel mayor Nazrul Islam.   Tareque who was the commanding officer of Rab-11 when the abductions and killings took place is the son-in-law of Disaster Management and Relief Minister Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya.   Meanwhile, two eyewitnesses to the abductions of the seven people -– Shahidul Islam Khokan and his college-going daughter Rabyea Akhter Ankhi — testified before the chief judicial magistrate on Thursday.   Later, they also made their deposition before the seven-member committee probing the brutal killings at the Circuit House.   Besides, the probe panel recorded the statements of two policemen and a Rab man.   They Rab-11 member Kamal Uddin, and policemen Omar Faruk and Rafiqul Islam.   Associates of slain panel mayor Nazrul Islam handed over a man to the two policemen on April 27. Later, Kamal got him released.   Besides, the committee probing the brutal seven murders will interrogate the former deputy commissioner and the SP of Narayanganj at the Secretariat on Sunday.   Ex-Narayanganj DC Manoj Kanti Boral and ex-SP Syed Nurul Islam have been asked to appear before the seven-member probe panel on the day, committee chief M Shahjahan Ali Mollah, an additional secretary to the Public Ministry, told UNB.   In another development, district police have sought Interpol’s help to arrest Nur Hossain, the main accused in the case.   While briefing reporters at his office at noon, police super Dr Khandaker Muhid Uddin said they have sent a letter to the Interpol through the Police headquarters in this regard.   On April 27, Narayanganj panel mayor Nazrul Islam and his three associates and driver were abducted from Fatullah area in Narayanganj city. Hours into their abduction, senior lawyer of the Narayanganj District Judge’s Court, Chandan Kumar Sarker, and his driver were abducted while they were going to capital Dhaka.   Three days into their abduction, the bodies of six people, including that of Nazrul and Chandan, were recovered from the Shitalakhya and Dhaleshwari rivers on April 30. Besides, the body of Jahangir, the car driver of Nazrul Islam, was recovered from the Shitalakhya River on May 1.   Following the seven murders, Shahidul Islam alias Shahid chairman, father-in-law of slain Nazrul Islam, alleged that some Rab men killed Nazrul in exchange for Tk 6 crore from city councillor Nur Hossain and other suspects. – UNB
