Experts for safer and optimum use of pesticides

Experts at a daylong training workshop have stressed ensuring safer and optimum use of chemical pesticides in crop fields to save the public health for greater national interests.
The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) in association with Bangladesh Crop Protection Association organised the workshop on ‘Safer Use of Pesticides’ at BRDB Hall Room in Boda upazila town of Panchagarh on Friday. Deputy director of the DAE, Panchagarh Al Mamunur Rashid attended the
workshop as the chief guest while 30 farmers and 20 pesticide traders and spray men from all over the upazila joined the programme. Sub-assistant agriculture officers Anwar Hossain and Rakibul Islam, representatives of Popular Agro Limited Abdus Salam, Mohsin Ali of Petrocom Bangladesh Limited, Mizanur Rahman of Nokan Limited, Enamul Haque of Auto Crop Limited and Al Mamun of Bangladesh Agriculture Limited, addressed.
Regional manager of Setu Corporation Limited Waheduzzaman Swapan and regional manager of Nokan Limited Utpal Kumar Paul conducted the
training workshop as the resource persons. The speakers said indiscriminate use of chemical pesticides creates a severe threat to the public health and stressed disseminating knowledge to the farmers for reduced and optimum use of pesticides in combating pests’ attacks and crop diseases. The chief guest put emphasis on creating adequate awareness and providing necessary knowledge among the farmers for combating pests’ attacks and crop diseases ensuring a safer and optimum use of the poisonous chemical pesticides He suggested the farmers to have adequate knowledge on pesticide use
and its proper handling as half of the farmers still use more pesticides than the optimum to protect their crops posing a real threat to the public health. –BSS, Rangpur
