Extortion by law enforcers: FBCCI VP quits market monitoring

Vice president of the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) M Helal Uddin on Saturday quit as its market monitoring convener and member of Commerce Ministry market monitoring committee protesting extortion by law enforcers.“Yes. I’ve quit. I’ve submitted my resignation letter to President (Kazi Akram Uddin Ahmed),” he told UNB over phone.
Responding to a question, Helal Uddin said he does not know whether his resignation is accepted.
“I feel helpless as convener of the committee. I think I’ve failed,” he said in his resignation letter,
Helal Uddin, who had earned the appreciation of all for his efforts to make kitchen market formalin free, said he was trying his best to keep the prices of essentials stable for the consumers.
“It has not been possible to implement the plan properly due to extortion by some dishonest officials of the law enforcing agencies,” it said.
He also mentioned that the FBCCI talked to the State Minister for Home and the Inspector General of Police to take effective steps for smooth transportation of vegetables and essentials during Ramadan but extortion by individuals, organisations and police is not decreasing.
He also referred to newspaper reports that highlighted extortion by police that ultimately hiked the prices of essentials. – UNB
