Extortionists kill Meherpur teacher, kidnap his grandson

Terrorists shot dead a schoolteacher and kidnapped his 10-year-old grandchild (niece’s
son) for refusing to pay toll at Shuvoraj village in Sadar upazila of the district around
midnight on Tuesday.
The deceased was identified as Abdul Halim, of the village and a teacher of Nischintapur
Government Primary School.
Officer-in-charge of Meherpur Sadar Police Station Riazul Islam said that armed
terrorists, numbering 15-20, stormed into the house of Halim after breaking the grill and
door of the house, around midnight and tried to kidnap Atiur Rahman, a class IV student
of Kutubpur Primary School.
When Halim resisted their kidnap bid, the terrorists shot him dead.
Hearing the screams for help by other inmates of the house, local people rushed to
the spot, but the kidnappers managed to get away with Atiur after blasting eight crude
bombs.
The kidnappers took away Atiur to India, local sources said.
The victim’s family said the kidnappers had been demanding toll from the boy’s father,
Alif Hossain, an expatriate living in South Africa for long.
Meanwhile, police recovered the body of Halim and sent it to Meherpur General Hospital
morgue for autopsy. -UNB, Meherpur
