Facebook recruits Bangla language translator

Facebook has recruited a Bangla language expert to check on traffic on its platform in that language.State Minister for Posts and Telecommunications Tarana Halim on Sunday said that this would make it possible for Facebook to spot any objectionable post in Bangla and delete it without delay. Her division had asked Facebook’s management to take steps to check growing threats and intimidation, harassment and personal attacks by using the social media platform in Bangladesh.”They have now informed us about their appointment of a Bangla language expert, when we reiterated our request for steps to check the problems,” Tarana told bdnews24.com.She said Facebook management had for a long time not been giving enough importance to the government’s complaints.”They did not understand which words and expressions were objectionable. Recently, our complaints over objectionable words and expressions were twice overlooked by them,” she said.

“Now they have informed us about the appointment of a Bangla language translator.”She said that it would now be easy for them to identify the objectionable words and expressions used on Facebook. “That should help them delete anything objectionable.”Tarana Halim said she was all set for another meeting with the Facebook management in Singapore on Jan 12.Cyber security and problems faced on Facebook by women will figure high on the agenda for the talks, she said. She had written on Nov 30 to the Facebook management for a discussion on the problems faced in Bangladesh in the way the social media platform was misused. On Dec 12, Facebook representatives arrived in Dhaka and met several ministers and senior officials of the Bangladesh government for a detailed discussion at the Home Ministry.
