Fakhrul given bail in 1 case refused in 2 others

The High Court has granted BNP acting Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir an interim bail for six months in one of the several vandalism cases pending against him.
The bench of Justices Md Rezaul Hasan and Muhammad Khurshid Alam Sarkar passed the order on Thursday.
One of the cases the senior BNP leader has been accused in pertains to a petrol-bomb attack on a vehicle in capital Dhaka on Jan 3. Earlier, on Jan 20, the HC had granted him an eight-week bail in the case.But the order was overturned on Mar 9 by a five-member Appellate Division bench, headed by Chief Justice Md Muzammel Hossain following an appeal by the state.
On Mar 16, Mirza Fakhrul renewed his bail appeal before Dhaka’s Chief Metropolitan Magistrate, who rejected the plea, landing the BNP leader in jail. He was also denied bail by the Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s court.
The CMM court on Thursday granted bail to BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir in a police constable killing case, but denied his bail pleas in two other cases.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Rajaul Karim passed the order after a hearing when he appeared before the court seeking bail.
The court also rejected his bail petitions in two bus arson attack cases –- one took place in Shahbagh area and another in Malibagh Chowdhury Para.
On January 20, the High Court granted bail for eight weeks (till March 29) to Fakhrul in the three cases.
On the night of December 24 last year, police constable Md Ferdous was burnt alive and two other constables suffered burn injuries as unidentified criminals set the vehicle on fire by pouring petrol at the capital’s Bangla Motor intersection.
Later, police filed a case against some BNP leaders, including Mirza Fakhrul, with Ramna Police Station.
On March 16, a CMM court sent Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and its two other leaders to jail rejecting their bail petitions in other cases. – UNB
