The Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Court of Dhaka yesterday (Wednesday) placed Shafiur Rahman Farabi, accused in the case filed for killing blogger Avijit Roy, on a two-day fresh remand.
Earlier, Metropolitan Detective Branch (DB) Inspector Fazlur Rahman produced Farabi to the court with a 10-day remand plea afresh for interrogation while Magistrate Maruf Hossain granted the 2-day fresh remand after hearing.
On March 3, this year, Magistrate Rezaul Karim of the CMM Court put the accused on a 10-day remand and on March 20, Magistrate Ashok Kumar Dutta placed Farabi on another 4-day remand.
Farabi was detained from Jatrabari area in the capital on March 2, as a suspect in the Avijit murder case. After he was detained at about 5 a.m. from a house on March 2, he was placed to the DB police at a quarter to the six in the evening for interrogation.
Shafiur Rahman Farabi is a son of Ferdousur Rahman, of Baravila Kumarshil Kalairsharipara under the Sadar Upazila of Brahmanbaria. He got admitted into the Physics department of Chittagong University after he passed HSC from Notre Dame College of Dhaka in 2005. Later, he did not continue his studies and the banned outfit Hijbut-Taherin Bangladesh in 2010. He placed different provocative status in face book and blog after the murder of blogger Rajeeb Haider. Farabi was arrested on that occasion and later he secured bail from the court.
On February 27, Avijit, a Bangladesh born US citizen, was hacked to death after he came to the capital on a visit from the US to meet his family members and see two of his books publication in the country’s then ongoing Ekushey Book fair. The incident occurred near the TSC intersection of Dhaka University. His wife Rafida Ahmed Bonya, also lost a finger of her hand in the attack.
A number of other people were arrested in the Avijit murder case and they were also put on remand for police interrogation. Even, on September 11, three people- Abul Bashar, Zulhash Biswash and Jafran Al Hasan alias ‘Justice’, who are known to be banned outfit Ansarullah Bangla Team men were placed on a 7-day remand each for interrogation.
