Dhaka, Apr 7 (UNB) – The condition of the female madrasa student from Feni, who suffered 80 percent burns, is critical, doctors said on Sunday.
A seven-member medical board, formed by the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) in the morning, examined the girl.
The victim had accused Sonagazi Islamia Senior Fazil Madrasa Principal Sirajuddoula of sexually harassing her. The principal was arrested on March 17 and subsequently suspended.
She was set afire on Saturday morning when she went to the madrasa to attend Alim exams. The madrasa has been shut down until April 17, after the incident grabbed the headlines and sparked outrage across Bangladesh. Only Alim examinations will be held.
The madrasa management committee has decided to provide Tk 200,000 for the victim’s treatment.
Moazzem Hossain, officer-in-charge of Sonagazi Model Police Station, said they have cordoned off the institution.
“We’ve detained a teacher and a student of the madrasa for interrogation,” he said. “But no case has been filed yet over Saturday’s incident.”
Meanwhile, Education Minister Dr Dipu Moni said the Prime Minister will bear all the expenditure of the victim’s treatment.
“The treatment of the victim is important now and the government is taking care of it,” she said while visiting her at the DMCH at night.
The minister also said those responsible for the incident will not be spared.
Our Staff Reporter adds – The burn and plastic surgery unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) yesterday formed a nine-member medical board for the treatment of the female student—an Alim (equivalent to HSC) examinee—who was allegedly set on fire at an examination centre in Sonagazi of Feni.
Dr Samanta Lal Sen, Chief co-ordinator of Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery at DMCH confirmed the matter to the Independent by saying that the girl was in critical condition.
He said, “She has suffered 80 percent burns and in a critical condition. The doctors are yet to say anything. We are trying our best.”
Again, Dr Samanta told the reporters that he met prime minister sheikh Hasina at her office and the prime minister asked Dr Samanta about the condition of the Madrasa girl and expressed her concern about the girl.
Dr Samanta said, “The Prime Minister ordered to arrest all of them immediately, who involve in the incident.”
The 18-year-old Nusrat Jahan Rafi has sustained severe burn injuries, which appears to be life-threatening.
The girl was set on fire for allegedly refusing to withdraw a case filed against the principal of Sonagazi Islamia Senior Fazil Madrasa, for sexually harassing her late last month.
Doctors said, her physical condition can take any direction. She suffered burns in her respiratory system, neck to leg. If her condition is stable, she will undergo surgery after 2/3 days.
Assistant professor of DMC, Dr Nasir Uddin said that medical treatment started on the basis of the medical board.
“According to the rules, she is being given food through piping. She is in critical Condition. Anything can be happen,” he said.
The nine members board which includes Prof Dr Abul Kalam Azad, Prof Dr Samanta Lal Sen was being headed by burn unit Professor Dr Raihana Awwal.
The victim’s brother Mahmudul Hasan Noman said he had spoken with his sister yesterday.
“She was put on Oxygen and wanted to have some water, but the doctors have advised her against drinking anything. Her condition remains unchanged,” he said.
