Ferry service at Shimulia-Kawrakandi route faces navigability crisis

Dhaka  – Ferry service in the Shimulia-Kawrakandi route, which is known as the gateway to 21 southern districts of the country, has been disrupted for poor navigability.Shah Newaj Khaled, assistant general manager of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC), said only four among the seventeen ferries, transported goods and passengers from Sunday night for the lack of navigability.The service of the four running ferries may be suspended any time due to the crisis, he added,UNB News Agency Reported.More than 500 vehicles remained stuck on both sides of the Padma River because of the disruption, leading to huge tailbacks as well as sufferings for passengers.Local sources said a huge number of underwater shoals have formed in the channels of the ferry routes between Mawa and Kawrakandi due to irregular dredging.
