The teachers of Geography and Environment (G&E) Department at Jahangirnagar University (JU) finally have started to resume academic activities from Tuesday, department sources said.

Earlier, they were continuing an indefinite work abstention for the last four weeks demanding one of their fellow teachers’ punishment.

The JU Vice Chancellor (VC) Prof Farzana Islam, however, assured them of resolving the burning issue at the soonest, confirmed the JU sources concerned.

Earlier, the agitating teachers, too, held a meeting with the JU authorities, chaired by the JU VC, last week to settle the ongoing crisis.
As per our VC’s assurance we have decided back to our classes and regular academic activities, said Prof Dr Md Nurul Islam of the department.

JU Registrar Abu Bakar Siddque said, “A probe committee was formed a few days ago and it’s expected to make some headway into the matter soon.”

The students, meanwhile, expressed their frustration over the past impasse as they apprehend facing session jam if the classed weren’t held as planned.

“We are facing session jam and our final examination process was remain in jeopardy due to the teachers’ movement,” said a fourth-year student, Redwan Al Rumman, of the department. “Now we would like to finish our courses as per as early,” he remarked.

Earlier, a section of the G&E department teachers asked to filed a general dairy (GD) to JU authority with Ashulia police station on November 14 raising some security issues and allegations against same department teacher Prof Manzurul Hassan and went later on an indefinite work abstention.
Allegations against the teacher includes – filing a writ against the department, irregularities in taking Masters final exam under 2011-12 academic year, unable to show financial statements timely and many more since 2004.

When asked, Prof Manzurul denied the allegations brought against him outright and said, “Violating the university Ordinance, the teachers illegally removed me from the post of Head of the Examination Committee.”
