‘Fire arms for narcotics officials to face life threat’

Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal on Thursday said firearms will be provided for the field level narcotics officials to reduce their life threat during anti-narcotics drives.
“A proposal for providing firearms for Department of Narcotics Control officials has already submitted and we are thinking over it,” the Home Minister said while addressing a officers’ conference at the head office of Department of Narcotics Control (DNC) at Tejgaon Industrial area in the city.Chaired by Director General of DNC Rakibur Rahman, the conference was also addresed among others, by senior Home Secretary Dr Md Muzammel Haque Khan.
He said the field level officers of the DNC have to work bravely without fear. They can take assistance from local law enforcers just before conducting anti-drug drive to avoid life threat, the Home Minister added.
“We want activities of drug control to be conducted properly,” he added.
He observed that tendency of drug addiction especially contraband Yaba tablets has been turning serious hampering implementation of vision 2021.
Despite ongoing drive against yaba tablets in Teknaf, it is not possible to control the same unless awareness is created among the mass people in this regard, the Home Minister added.
“Narcotics control is not possible until the people are not aware about the menance”, Kamal said.
About increasing capability of DNC, he said initiatives have already taken to increase its strength, including increasing manpower and logistics support so that activities of the department become visible.
The Home Minister later formally adorned rank badge and gave new uniforms for officials and employees of the department. – News Desk
