Dhaka-The overall flood situation in northern districts worsens further due to incessant rain and onrush of water from the upstream. Flood affected areas are witnessing extreme scarcity of food, drinkable water and fuels.
Among the districts that are affected by flood, Lalmonirhat, Sirajganj, Bogra, Jamalpur, Sunamganj and Kurigram, Gazipur are hit hard most.
Our Jamalpur correspondent reports: With the continuous of rising of water level in the river Jamuna flood situation in the district deteriorated.
The flood water has affected four unions in Dewanganj upazila and five unions in Islampur upazila of the district.
Water Development Board sources, during the last 24 hours Jamuna rose by 10 cm and was flowing 22 cm above the red mark at Bahadurabad ghat point yesterday noon.
Dewanganj Upazila Parishad Chairman, Abul Kalam Azad told this correspondent that low laying areas in Chukaibari, Chikajani, Charamkhwa and Dewanganj unions in Dewanganj upazila were inundated. According to Islampur upazila administration sources low laying areas in Patharshi, Kulkandi, Belgachha, Chinaduli and Noarpara union in Islampur upazila were inundated. Chairman, Chinadui Union Parishad, Abdus Salam said 2 000 people in five villages in the union were marooned by the flood water.
District Administration sources said dried food and other essential materials were allotted in the two upazilas for distribution among the flood victims.
In Kurigram, water level of the rivers Brahmaputra, Dhorola, Teesta and Dudhkumar have kept rising trend. Around 290 villages have been inundated and around 3,930 families have been suffering from river erosion. People of many people area have been passing days with fear that their areas would also be flooded.
Nearly two million people of 40 unions in Kurigram Sadar, Chilmari, Ulipur, Raumari, Rajibpur, Nageshwari, Phulbari upazilas have been suffering due to flood.
Many of the flood affected areas remained disconnected from the important roads to city and bazars. Schools in the areas are witnessing lesser presence of students. People marooned by flood are eagerly waiting for relief materials. Reportedly on behalf of the government offices, NGOs and volunteers relief materials are being sent to the flood-affected people. But victims are alleging that the relief materials are inadequate compared with needs.
In Sirajganj, some of the lower laying areas in Sirajganj Sadar, Kajipur, Belkuchi, Chauhal an, Shahzadpur upazila have been flooded. People of 40 unions have been marooned by flood water.
People of char areas of the districts are suffering more. Same is the picture of the Bogra district. Every day new areas of the district are being flooded. The Jamuna is now flowing 18-20 cm above its danger level in the district.
Flood situations in Sunamganj deteriorated. Heavy rainfall in the districts caused water rise in rivers and haors of the district.
Yesterday the river Surma was flowing 18-20 cm above its danger level in the district leaving thousands of people marooned by flood. People of the flood affected area have been suffering from acute scarcity of food and drinkable water.
As most of the areas remained under water for a week, around 500 hectars of paddy have been damaged. Sunamganj district commissioner Sheikh Rafikul Islam said five tonnes rice have been allocated for each flood affected areas and for more allocation a letter has been sent to the concerned ministry.
In Lalmonirhat river Teesta in Dalia point was flowing 20 cm above the danger level.
Most part of the low-lying areas in Hatibandha, Kaliganj, Aditmari and Sadar upazila have gone under water.
Our Gazipur correspondent adds: At least 2500 peoples of Begunbari and Munshipara area of Sreepur municipality in Gazipur have been marooned in the past two months due to incessant rain and lack of proper drainage system.
However, the municipality authorities have given order to build roads and drains in the area. But they are not being able to start works due to rain and water-logging. However, Sanowar Hossain, engineer of Sreepur municipality said: “As there is lack of proper drainage system we are thinking to discharge water from the areas in an alternative way.-STAFF REPORTER
